6th Grade County Report – part one –
geologic history to present landforms/soils
Take notes in your own words to answer the following questions. Use words and short phrases. Do NOT copy
sentences. Your handwritten notes will be a major part of your grade.
- Describe
the bedrock in the area your county is located.
- Describe
the area as it must have been when it was under a shallow sea
- Tell
what fossils are present and how some scientific theories say they could have been left there.
- Find
information about when your region became land above water.
- Name
and describe the movement of glaciers over your region and what evidence remains regarding the different glaciers that moved
over the area. Are there any scars or strikes that can be found in your area? Are there nonconformities that we read about.
- Tell
what formations, tills, or erratics were left behind after the last glaciers melted away.
- Describe
the soils and rocks left by glacial melt water.
- Tell
what else may have happened to create landforms or move earth material in the times since glaciers.
- What
are the predominant soil and or rock types left in your area?
- Describe
the amount of soil covering the bedrock in your area.
- Describe
the present day landforms of your area.
Find a soil map of your county if you can. (Search the Department of Agriculture or Soil Conservation sites.)
Print these maps after approving them with a teacher.
Arrange your notes by topics and write paragraphs to describe
the geology of your county and surrounding counties in your group.
