Chemistry II Spectroscopic Element ID LAB _____________________State Goal 11.A.5ac

PURPOSE: To identify certain elements from their brightline spectrum
PROCEDURE: Use the Project Star spectrometer to observe the spectra
1. The writting on the spectrometer should be facing up.
2. Position the spectrometer to allow the light to pass through the front slit.
3. The light source should be about one meter from the slit.
4. Look through the opening on the smallest end of the spectrometer.
5. Look left! There you will see a brightline specta.
6. In the areas below carefully draw what you see. Use colored pencils
Record the wavelengths.
7. The elements that you are using are bromine, hydrogen, mercury, and argon.
8. Go to BRIGHTLINE PERIODIC TABLE

QUESTIONS

1. Define ground state?
2. Define excited state?
3. Name forms of energy that usually excite electrons.
4. Explain, why there are bright lines.
5. Predict the element in test number:
(1.)
(2.)
(3.)
(4.)
