The United States Flag Code adopted by Congress provides the rules for honoring and displaying the American flag.  The code itself states: "The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing."  For this reason you should give it your full respect.

Introduction
The American Flag is one the our most important American symbols.  How much do you  know about it?  Take this quiz to test your skills on the American flag.

Your job is to research some the the websites listed below about the American Flag.  Using these websites, complete the American Flag worksheet and answer the discussion questions on flag etiquette.

Process
 
     1.  Open the link below to access the American Flag Worksheet.  Resave
          the worksheet to your file on the server. Type your answers in to the word
          document.  Please change the color of your answers to stand out from the
          questions.  When you have completed the worksheet print out a copy to
          turn in.
      2.  On a new word document, type your answers to 1 of the 3
           discussion/essay questions.  Follow the same guidelines that you have
           learned for persuasive writing in Language Arts class.  Answers must be
           written in in 2-3 paragraphs each with at least 5 complete sentences per
           paragraph, and   double spaced.  Have another classmate proofread your
           paragraphs.  Then print off your essay and staple to your American Flag
           worksheet to turn in.

American Flag Etiquette Worksheet

Discussion/Essay Topics
     You must answer 1 of the 3 topics in complete paragraphs and sentences.
 
           A.  In 1984, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that flag burning was
                protected by the First Amendment as freedom of expression.  Should
                a constitutional amendment be passed to banning flag burning? Do
                you think it is right to burn the American flag?
 
           B.  The original Pledge of Allegiance was published in 1892.  In the
                state of Illinois public schools are required to recite the Pledge daily. 
                How do you feel about the pledge?  Do you think students should be
                required to say the pledge in school?
 
           C.  The first U.S. flag was raised by George Washington in 1776. 
                After 1794, for each new state admitted to the Union, a star was added
                to the blue canton.  How do you think the nation would react if the
                United States flag was redesigned?

Evaluation
 
The American Flag Etiquette Worksheet will be completed for a homework grade. It will be due: MARCH 19, 2008. 
 
The essay will be graded using the following rubric and it will be worth a quiz grade.  It will be due: MARCH 28, 2008.
