Texas Independence

You are a member of the Sailor Historical Society researching Texas’ independence from Mexico. What important events do we consider leading factors to the turmoil which took place resulting in the major battles fought and which led to Mexico's surrender of its' northernmost territory?

Task

You will gather information of Santa Anna’s invasion leading to his defeat on the Brazos. As members of the historical society, divide into groups of 3; editor, news reporter, and artist.

    Editor—research, analyze and collate gathered information
    News Reporter-write articles of 3 specific battles
    Artist-Depict drawing of the surrender for cover page for combined composition

Editor

  • Locate and obtain books, magazine articles and web sites containing information leading to
    General Santa Anna's' defeat and surrender.
  • Make a time line with dates identifying major events leading to the causes of the conflict.
  • Write a summary paragraph of the time line

    News Reporter

  • Locate accounts of major battles fought and select three relating to the task.
  • Rewrite three reports relating to the task, as if Reporter were actually present and witnessing the action. Put this on a one page document (in columns). Use up to 3 graphics.

    Artist

  • Find territorial maps, pictures and major battle locations that can be reproduced relating to the task.
  • Obtain Teacher approval before beginning work.
  • Create a document for each of the three major battles including a map and up to three graphics..

    Process

    1. Divide into groups of three.
    2. Select your role
    3. Complete the task assigned to you
    4. Group presents oral report with presentation of sketches, results of interviews,eyewitness accounts, time line and summary paragraph.

    Evaluation

    1 oral report to class, each student participating, 1 combined grade ; as well as a written composition (see rubric handout)
