Evaluating the Presidents

Mount Rushmore honors four of our greatest Presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. If this famous South Dakota monument was being rechiseled today, which Presidents' faces would be added and which would be sandblasted off?

The Task

Your task is to develop a list of qualities that make a great president. Some "Presidential experts" have identified such qualities as: Leadership, Diplomatic skills, .....
    1) Identify and define what you feel are the 5 most important qualities our President needs to possess.
    2) Rank these qualities in order of importance from 1 to 5 (1 most important).
    3) Research the Presidents.
    4) Select the 5 greatest Presidents of all time.
    5) Cite examples to support your choices.
    6) Write a 1 page paper presenting and defending your selections.

    The Process

    To accomplish your task:
      1) Identify, define and rank key Presidential qualities (outside of class)
      2) Research the Presidents (during and outside of class)
      3) Make your selections and write the paper.
      4) Follow the guidelines on the Columbus High Style Sheet for your paper.
      5) Document the resources that you used.

    Learning Advice

    You may want to make sure you are clear in your mind of what constitutes "Greatness". Remember some Presidents weren't thought of as good Presidents while they were in office or shortly after and now are viewed in a much more favorable light. And some Presidents were beloved while in office and have now dropped as revelations about their flaws have surfaced.

    Conclusion and Assessment

    It has been called the toughest job in the world. After completing this assignment, you will have a better understanding of the qualities necessary to perform this job. You will be assesed with a "rubric", outlining project requirements.
