What Is First Grade All About?
In first grade we learn so much. Every year I am so excited to see how much
my students have progressed throughout the year. We read a variety of books in different ways throughout the year.
Sometimes I read aloud to them, sometimes they read to me or each other, and other times we read together as a class.
In first grade we do "The Phonics Dance" to learn about all of the different sounds
that make up words. "The Phonics Dance" involves music and movement to teach kids how to decode words by finding "hunks"
and "chunks" in their reading.
We do "writing workshop" daily in first grade. Students write about what
is important to them. I conference with students daily about their writing strengths, as well as their individual
goals for improvement. Then at the end of "writing workshop" students enjoy sharing their stories with the
class.
In first grade we do many hands-on activities. We use lots of manipulatives
in math to teach the different math strategies. In science we do hands-on experiments to allow students to investigate
and learn about their world.
First grade is so much fun and full of learning! I love teaching your children;
they make coming to school each and every day enjoyable!
