Music at the Junior High level at Lansing Christian School includes a higher level of learning and responsibility than
in earlier grades, just like all other classes at the Junior High level. In seventh grade, we examine how Christians
look at music differently than non-Christians, and then we study the elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, form,
dynamics, tempo and tone color. The eighth graders take a brief survey of music history, including the Baroque, Classical
and Romantic periods. Every Junior High student at Lansing Christian will have General Music for one semester, one day
per week.
In all General Music classes, we sing Christian devotional songs at the beinning of the period, and then address our
music academic work. We do have occasional assignments in General Music, and several quizzes. Students earn a
letter grade based on their academic work and their bahavior, attitude and participation in class. In our classes,
we do everything from singing, to playing bells and drums, to listening to musical examples, to watching movies, to creating
melodies, and more.
In Choir, we do lots of singing! We learn how to sing correctly, and focus on Christian repertoire in which
the words are directly God glorifying. We present three concerts per year at Lansing Christian, plus we go caroling
out in the community around the Christmas season. Every other year, we also participate in the Junior High Choral Festival
at Illiana Christian High School.

Our theme verses for this year in choir are Psalm 33:1-5: "Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;
it is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful
in all he does. The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth if full of his unfailing love."
Take a few minutes to make some music or listen to some music today!

CHOIR PRESENTS SPRING CONCERT
On Thursday, March 12, the Choir participated in the Lansing Christian School Band and Choir Concert. We are grateful
to God that He allowed us to enjoy presenting our music, and that it was a successful performance. Many audience members
gave positive feedback to the choir's singing.
The concert began with "How Excellent is Thy Name," which is a song based on Psalm 8. The energetic accompaniment
was played by Lynnae De Jong. The featured soloists were Rachel Fosdal and Jennifer Krygsheld.
Several people said that they were really moved by the song "Lead Me Back." This song was based on the story
of the prodigal son from Luke 15, and featured Monica Smits reading the story from Scripture during the song. Luke Venhuizen
sang the opening solo, singing words that the prodigal son speaks to his father. Lynnae also accompanied this
song.
The next song, "Your Grace Still Amazes Me," was also well-received and appreciated by the audience. This song
expressed the awe that we feel as we consider how gracious our God is to us. The accompanist for this song was Lauren
Vermeer.
Our finally song was a very exuberant "Elijah Rock." The challenging accompaniment was played by Jennifer Krygsheld,
and the whole choir enjoyed singing this energetic piece.
We have already begun preparing for our final concert, the "Kids Concert." Please plan to join us on Thursday,
May 28 for that event, which will again feature all three of the Bands and also the Choir.
