Students Obtaining Success Program

BCHS Web Page

What is SOS?

The Students Obtaining Success Program has been developed to assist students in grades 9th through 12th in completing a regular high school program.  Some of the services provided to the student/parent are curriculum adjustments, progress/attendance checks, weeky communication with parent/teacher, tutoring services and referrals to other services.

CARE Team
The CARE Team has been developed to provide support for parents, students, and teachers.  The mission of the CARE Team is to make early detections of at-risk students, identify the situation and coordinate an invtervention plan for the purpose of providing the most advantageous learning environment for all students.  Students may be referred to the CARE Team by parents, teachers, and administrators.  The CARE Team consists of teachers, social worker, counselor, and the SOS director.

Attendance vs. Grades

There is a strong correlation between attendance and academics.  Students with poor attendance, in most cases, have poor grades and are at risk of dropping out of high school or not being on track for graduation.

When a student misses a class, that student is expected to make contact with that teacher and have all work made up by the following class period.  If a student misses more than one day of school, the parent may call the school and request homework to be picked up in the reception office.

Parents and students should carefully review Benton High School's policy on attendance beginning on page 22.of the 2008-2009 handbook.

Here's How You Can Improve Your Child's School Attendance

  • Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
  • Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
  • Don't accept excuses for why your child "must" miss or be late for school.
  • Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.
  • Show your child why education is important. Give specific examples of how education helps people succeed.
  • Lead by example!  If children see parents taking off work for no real reason, they may expect to be able to do the same thing.
