FSS School Improvement Plan Goals
Goal #1: Strengthening Student Achievement in English Language Arts
Students will read with fluency and comprehension, understanding and appreciating
the many forms of literature. They will enjoy the act of reading for the pleasure it brings and the worlds of knowledge that
reading reveals. Students will write with authenticity, expressing their ideas with confidence in a well developed composition
using a strong personal voice through rich language and standard writing conventions. They will enjoy the process of writing
as an act of self expression of their ideas and in-sights, which they feel are worthy and important to share.
Goal #2: Strengthening Student Achievement in Mathematics.
Students will understand mathematical concepts and be proficient in computation
in all five strands: Number Sense, Patterns and Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Data and Statistics as outlined in the MA
frameworks. Students will be able to apply their knowledge to problem solve using a variety of strategies. Students will appreciate
the creativity and importance of mathematics in daily life, and be confident of their ability to both compute and problem
solve.
Goal #3: Technology and Curriculum Enhancement
Many of the most memorable experiences that children have in elementary school revolve
around the subjects and experiences that are too frequently viewed as peripheral to the academic curriculum. Federal
Street School is committed to keeping technology, the arts, library and physical education as vital and growing portions of
our curriculum. All students, K-5, receive weekly music, art, physical education, and technology classes. FSS library, maintained
by volunteers, is open regularly for use by all classes. The Peter Ward Computer Lab has been established and recently upgraded
through fundraising and generous donations. FSS Technology Committee is building a multi-year plan to keep our technology
resources and staff professional development current.
Goal #4: Creating a Caring & Responsive School Climate
Research shows that positive school climate plays a critical in the ability of students
to focus on learning and succeed in school. Federal Street School is committed to building a caring responsive community
of learners. Through school-wide implementation of Responsive Classroom the growth of whole child (physical, social-emotional,
and cognitive) will be nurtured and developed.
Goal #5: Extending the Community Connection
Research shows that a strong home-school connection and active community involvement is highly
correlated to student achievement. Federal Street School is committed to expanding opportunities for parents and community
members to be more involved in our school in on-going and meaningful ways. An active PTO and School Council and positive school-parent
relations lay a strong groundwork for further growth in this area.
