The Music Curriculum
Music students at La Porte City Elementary have many opportunities to express their musical talents. They are
exposed to a variety of musical genres and have hands-on experience with musical techniques.
At the end of the fifth grade year, the music students will have experienced music through singing, movement and playing
of Orff instruments, percussion instruments and tone chimes. The students will have developed their music skills through singing
solfege syllables and reading rhythm patterns in different meters. Topics covered include: two-part singing, syncopated rhythm
patterns, sixteenth notes, treble and bass clefs, musical form and musical production. They will also learn to play the soprano
recorder, practice music theory in the computer lab and are exposed to the orchestral families of instruments. Basic music
concepts will be attained through movement, singing and listening. Throughout the elementary grades, the students will participate
in several performance groups for parents and the community.
