What's So Special About Kindergarten?
One of the reasons I love teaching Kindergarten is because I get to watch and help each child grow and progress
over the year. When children enter Kindergarten, some don't know the alphabet...and when they leave Kindergarten, many have
grown into emergent readers and writers!
We start the year out learning about each of our Kindergarten friends. We learn the letters in each child's name,
as well as about their family, favorites, and interests. This is a great way to make learning the letters interesting
and meaningful to the students. Rather than take "a letter a day", I believe in teaching the letters throughout every
day, and in the context of reading and writing together.
Throughout the Kindergarten day, my students are actively engaged in hands-on learning activities.
We sing, move, dance, read, and use manipulatives in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I feel
that five and six year olds are much more interested and excited to learn if they can actually "Do" rather than watch
or do a worksheet.
Kindergarten is a lot of fun!! By exposing children to a variety of literacy experiences and hands-on activities,
your child will leave Kindergarten with the ability to read and write simple stories!! How exciting is that???!!!!
