Gifted and Talented

Selection Procedure
Selection of Students - Step by Step Procedure

1.  Nomination forms are made available to all teachers, parents, and students. (See counselor or ALPHA teacher). This information is publicized in local newspapers, on Channel 17, included in school newsletters, web pages, and flyers posted at each campus.  (MISD does not offer assessment services to the general public, only MISD students.)

2. Teacher Inventories are distributed and returned to Alpha teacher or Counselor.

3. Student product samples or other qualitative measurements, such as Academic Rating Scales and other teacher observation forms, are gathered.

4.  All eligible nominated students are tested in their primary language or using nonverbal tests. Assessments of cognitive ability and academic achievement are included.   Some of the assessments that may be used are:

  • SAGES-2   (K-8)
  • Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT)
  • Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS or ITED) (5-11)
  • Cognitive Abilities Tests (CogAT) (5-11)
Any student who has been tested within one calendar year of nomination on a nationally normed
assessment may be exempt from further testing.

5.  All available information is placed on the Student Profile Sheet. The Student Profile Sheet acts as a table of contents for the portfolio and allows the Campus Selection Committee to view data results as a whole.

6. Campus Selection Committee meets to review nominations and make decisions on each. Members include the Principal or Assistant Principal, Counselor, Alpha teacher, and classroom teachers (GT certified), to include member(s) ethnically representative of the student population.

7. If the Campus Selection Committee deems further assessment is necessary, the GT Specialist/facilitator will gather that information. Possible new assessment data includes:

  • GATES (Gifted and Talented Evaluation Scales)
  • TONI-3 (Tests of Nonverbal Intelligence)
  • Additional student products
  • Student interview or parent interview

8.  Parents are notified of committee decisions through regular mail.

9. Parent, teacher, or student may bring new information to the campus committee for review of previous decision.

10. Campus Selection Committee meets to review new information and makes a new or repeated decision.

Appeals will be handled in a manner consistent with MISD policy- FNG (Local).
