I was born in
Baltimore
Maryland although both my parents were from Maryville. My mother was from Cades Cove and was a descendent of John Oliver an early pioneer
of Cades Cove. My family moved back to Maryville
where I attended Eagleton Elementary School
and Eagleton Junior High (now Eagleton Middle
School). I graduated from Everett High School. After high school, I earned a baseball scholarship to Cleveland
State Community College where
I was a pitcher and was placed on the All Conference Team. I then attended the University of Tennessee
– Knoxville where I graduated with a degree in Education
with a certification in history. I earned my Masters Degree in Administration
at Union College in Kentucky
and earned my Plus 45 from the University of Tennessee.
I joined the Tennessee Air
National Guard in 1970. I retired as a Master Sergeant after 24 years of military
service. I have been married to my wife, Debbie, for 31 years. Debbie is a 1st grade teacher at Middlesettlements
Elementary School. We have
two children, a son, Murph who teaches at Heritage High School and a daughter, Michelle.
I have umpired High School
baseball for many years and have umpired 8 High School State Baseball Tournaments. I
love to play golf and I am a dyed in the wool UT football fan. My blood runs
Big Orange.
I started teaching in 1975
at Townsend High School
during the last 2 years it was open. Then, it was on to Friendsville High
School for 2 years, 1 year at William Blount High School and then to Eagleton Middle School where I have been for the past
25 years. I have taught history, Tennessee
history and geography. During my early years at Eagleton, I coached football
and basketball where I was privileged to have coached several championship teams. I
was Assistant Principal here at EMS for 9 years then became Principal.
I am in my 4th
year as Principal at EMS. I have been here at
EMS for so long that it feels like home. I am
very proud of all the dedicated staff here and of how well the students have performed.
We recently had a reunion of all graduates of Eagleton Junior High. I
was amazed at all the different professions that Eagleton has produced over the years.
Eagleton has produced many successful doctors, lawyers, nurses, educators and valuable community members. So, welcome to EAGLETON MIDDLE
SCHOOL and let’s continue the tradition of producing outstanding, successful community members.
