The Life Skills program at Marissa Junior Senior High School is just simply incredible, unique, and offers the best education possible for students with disabilities in all disability categories, at any functional level.  The classroom is run by a team of highly educated, highly trained professionals who are equipped to help your student achieve a variety of successful goals and objectives in many different situations at school, at home, and in the community.

We are proud to be highly qualified to teach all students with disabilities and we will go above and beyond to make sure your student receives an educational experience that will last a lifetime.

Some of the services we offer in addition to IEP services are:
  • A Special Education Teacher who has been recognized as being 'Highly Qualified' by the Illinois State Board of Education and is a Learning Behavior Specialist trained to teach students with Cognitive Disorders (CD), Behavioral Disorders (BD), Social and Emotional Disorders (SED), and Learning Disabilities (LD)
  • An on staff social worker and speech pathologist
  • Access to the latest educational technology including a notebook laptop and a SmartBoard
  • Real life community experiences in the home and surrounding communities
  • Multiple paraprofessionals to assist students with everything from academics to activities of daily living
  • Regular education class participation beginning in middle school and continuing through high school
  • Transition planning for after graduation assisted by the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS)
  • Student and family based goal planning for IEP services
  • Academics based on both Illinois State Learning Standards and Illinois Alternative Assessment Standards for Students With Disabilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge base of legal rights and responsibilities regarding students with disabilities

The Life Skills classroom is a cross categorical self-contained classroom for students with disabilities in grades seven through twelve.  The goal of this program is to help students to become participating members of their own communities as independently as possible through a blend of life skills and functional academics.
