IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Power of "I"
We have instituted a program called "The Power of I." This year, we have a zero tolerance policy for
failing to turn in important assignments. Should you miss an assignment, you will have 1 day to turn it in. If
the assignment is not completed, your name will be placed on an "ICU" list. This list will be forwarded by email throughout
the school building. Your teachers, our administration, and everyone in our building will have access to who is on the
list. This will be viewed as a positive thing, as those people will attempt to help you get your assignment completed.
If your assignment has not been completed by the end of a grading period, you will have no grade in that
class. You will not have a grade in that class until all incomplete assignments are completed.
This can all be avoided by turning all assignments in on time!

DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF 6th GRADERS
Sixth graders oftentimes feel they don't quite fit in. They no longer see themselves
as elementary students and yet they are not quite middle school students. The faculty and staff of Eagleton Middle School
believe it is very important to structure this upcoming sixth grade year in a way that best meets the academic, emotional,
and social needs of our students. To that end, EMS recommends our new sixth graders continue in a self-contained classroom
rather than following the traditional middle school model of changing classes for each subject. We believe this allows
sixth graders time to adjust to the changes taking place in themselves and their world.

PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR SIXTH GRADE
During sixth grade, your child will be expected to work on higher-level thinking skills.
Having mastered "the basics" in kindergarten through fifth grade, sixth graders are expected to begin to apply what they have
learned and take a great deal of responsibility for their own learning. Because of this, it is essential that your child
has mastered the subject matter taught in kindergarten through fifth grade. If your child is lacking in any subject
area, it is advisable to get individualized help through a tutor before beginning the sixth grade year.
It is also important that your child be able to handle important life skills such
as organization, completing assignments, keeping track of due dates, and preparing for tests. If your child struggles
in any of these areas, it would be wise to spend time prior to the beginning of the school year working on these skills at
home. Sixth graders are expecte to take on a great deal more responsibility as they prepare for seventh grade.
All sixth graders, for example, are expected to keep an academic planner. This assists them in keeping track of tests,
due dates, and long projects with timelines.

ASSESSMENTS
This year, we will use a variety of assessments to track academic progress.
These assessments will include quizzes, tests, papers, daily assignments and projects. Your child will also be assessed
based on classroom participation and daily preparedness for class. At the end of each academic quarter (9 weeks), you
will receive a report card with your child's grades for the previous nine weeks. You will also receive a mid-quarter
report, five weeks into each academic quarter.
All sixth graders participate in the ThinkLink Learning Test. This test is given
three times per year to track academic progress. It provides objective, norm-referenced data to inform and enhance classroom
instruction. All sixth graders will also participate in the state-mandated T.C.A.P. testing as well.

HELPING YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN SIXTH GRADE
There are a number of ways you can help your child have a successful sixth grade year.
Primarily it will be through a delicate balance of guiding and training without lowering academic expectations. As you
help your child learn how to be successful as a student and an individual, you will be preparing him/her well for the years
ahead. This is best done through guiding and training, but remember, it is not you who is ultimately responsible for
everything. IT IS YOUR CHILD.
While in elementary school, it is frequently necessary for parents to intercede and
make sure homework and studying get done. By the time a student reaches sixth grade, he/she should be responsible for
that himself/herself. Sometimes this may include allowing your child to go to school unprepared and face the consequences.
It is a hard balance to achieve as you train your child in these areas, but as he takes on more responsibility, he/she will
be better equipped for the responsibilities of future grades.

HOMEWORK EXPECTATION FOR SIXTH GRADERS
Homework is an integral part of the learning process in sixth grade. You can
expect your child will have at least one hour of homework each day. this homework will take a variety of forms.
It will include reading, studying notes, studying for quizzes or tests, doing research projects, writing, and mathematics.
It is crucial to your child's success that homework be completed and turned in on a regular basis.
In my classroom, students are expected to turn in all assignments on time. Late
assignments may be turned in the following day for 3/4 credit or two days late for 1/2 credit. Assignments will not
be accepted after two days except in the case of an absence. Students absent will have the number of days the were absent
to make up all assignments. It should be noted it is the responsibility of the student to obtain any make-up work if
they are absent.

REMEMBER: Morning math tutoring is available each morning
from 7am until 8am, with either Mr. Lane or Mr. Norville. Students may attend any time they feel the need for
extra help. I strongly encourage you to attend tutoring, especially if you are having trouble mastering the material
we cover in class.
