Green River School Newsletter
Joan Schell, Ed.D., Principal
May 2007
Dear Green River Families,
With the decline in number of elementary school children in Greenfield,
and with current budgetary constraints, the decision has been made to restructure the district and close Green
River as an elementary school. Leaving Green River
is hard for us to accept. However, in the best interest of our children
I am asking families to work with me to make the transition to new schools successful.
I will be communicating more specific information soon about transition plans; however, for now I want to offer words
of encouragement. Children are very resilient and typically adjust successfully to change, often more readily than adults. I hope the following thoughts will help you reassure your children as you talk to
them about moving to different schools.
- No matter what school your
child attends in the future we will work hard to make the transition smooth and positive
- Children will have the opportunity
to meet new friends
- The teachers and administrators at all the Greenfield schools are highly qualified and will continue to provide
quality education to your children
- Scott Foresman Reading Street Core reading program is offered K-5 across the district
and plans are afoot to add additional grades
- All elementary schools in
Greenfield practice the Responsive Classroom social curriculum and the Greenfield Middle School practices Responsive
Design to promote safe, respectful school communities
- The other elementary schools
in Greenfield typically have two classes per grade with enrollment between
190 and 250 students, so they are still small, welcoming schools.
- Children moving to the Greenfield Middle School will attend a small “school within a
school” housed in one section of the building. Chris Collins, Greenfield
Middle School Principal, will be contacting families of current 4th and 5th graders within the next
week or so with more information regarding the transition to Greenfield Middle School
If you have questions or comments please don’t hesitate to call 772-1385
or speak to me at dismissal when you see me outside. I am eager to help in any
way I can.
Sincerely,
Joan Schell, Ed.D., Principal
A Vision for Our School
Green River is a school where learning runs deep.
At Green River we believe we can all reach our hopes and dreams
successfully through a love of learning, a passion for reading, a thirst for knowledge and a curiosity about the world around
us.
To master our learning and make it more meaningful
we observe carefully, think critically, express ourselves clearly, and perform creatively.
We work hard and try our best.
Green River is a school where caring runs deep.
At Green River we help each other reach our hopes and dreams by
building a safe, responsive community where we offer friendship, play fair, and have fun together.
We support each other and work as a team.
