East High Math Department - Mr. Hoyne

"We all use math every day. To predict weather, to tell time, to handle money -- math is more than formulas and equations; it's logic, it's rationality. It's using your mind to solve the greatest mysteries we know."  (Opening lines of TV series NUMB3RS on CBS)

"There are three kinds of people: those who understand Math, and those who don't." (Source unknown)

Your feelings toward Math probably fall somewhere between the two ideas stated above.

At a minimum, we all need to be able to use Math at a functional level - to make sure we get the correct change back at the store, to figure out how many days of school remain until summer vacation, or to estimate how long it will take us to drive somewhere.

At the other extreme, we use mathematical relationships to describe the behavior of the world around us. These models then allow us to predict the weather, design new cancer fighting drugs, and travel to other planets.

Regardless of how you plan to use math, it is our responsibility to prepare you for that "real world".

Meet the Challenge!

Clipart of a pencil; Size=135 pixels wide

Divide $97 (in whole $ increments) into a number of bags so that I can ask for any amount between $1 and $97, and you can give me the proper amount by giving me a certain number of these bags without opening them.

What is the minimum number of bags you will require?

Graphs In the News

zfacts-gasoline-price.gif

The above graph shows how the price of a gallon of gasoline has changed over the years. However, back in 1972, I know I only paid around 50 cents for a gallon of gas - yet the graph shows the price of gas as around $1.40 per gallon!

What's wrong: my memory, the graph, or something else?

I'll post the answers on the "Class Bulletin Board" page.
