Welcome!

On this page and website you will learn about the 30th element on the periodic table, Zinc.

The element symbol for zinc is Zn, but what is an element symbol all about? The real purpose for one is that it's really just a short term way to write all the elements, which comes in handy when you might find yourself writing about an element like unnilhexium because you can then just write Unh. All the elements on the periodic table have one of these symbols consisting of somewhere between one to three letters. The reason for the variation in the number of letters is that some elements have similar letters in their names and without the changes in the symbol no one would be able to tell them apart from their short term version. The change in the symbols is not only the similarities to other element's symbols but also because some elements are refered back to their original names which come from different languages, which are most of the time Greek.

More parts of the element are its atomic number and average mass. The atomic number for zinc is 30, this tells the number of protons and eletrons found in and around the nucleus of the atom. The average mass number for zinc is 65.409 grams, this tells the average isotope's weight of zinc.
