Poet Seat is an DOE approved, substantionally separated special education day school for grades 6-12.
All students who come to Poet Seat have Individual Education Plans (IEP) documenting an emotional disability. A student's
special education team recommends a placement depending upon his/her needs. When the needs are such that a highly structured
substantially separate setting is required, a referral is made to Elizabeth Blumgarten, the Program Director. She along
with the clinical coordinator review the student's documentation to ensure the program can provide the necessary services. The
student and his/her parent(s)/guardian are invited to visit. Next, an intake meeting is scheduled. Necessary forms are
completed and Poet Seat rules and procedures are reviewed. A start date is determined and transportation is arranged.
Necessary health records and a signed PL2 page must be received before a student can start.
The special education teacher from the sending setting is responsible for developing the IEP. Frequently, the team will
decide to reconvene a few weeks following admission to to review, and, if neccessary, amend the IEP.
Referrals are accepted throughout the year. Poet Seat provides a six week summer program for thoses students
determined to require an extended school year.
Out of District Referrals
Students from neighboring school districts can attend Poet Seat School. The school district (LEA) in which
the student lives pays tuition to the Greenfield Puplic School District. It is the responsibility of the sending school
district to arrange transportation.
Initially, the special education director from the sending district contacts the program director of Poet Seat.
A referral packet follows. Again, the referral packet is reviewed , and if the program director and clinical director
agree that the services outlined in the IEP can be provided, the student is accepted. A visit is scheduled and the same
intake procedure follows.
