There are many ways you can prepare your child for the wonderful world
of reading.
- Stretch words out to see if your child can put the sounds together to figure
out the word. Also, have your child stretch out words to hear the sounds in the word. This is a big help when
writing! Click here and check out this fun short vowel web site!
- Practice knowing the letters of the alphabet and the sounds each letter
makes. Reinforce our Letter of the Week at home by finding things that begin with the letter's sound and writing
words that begin with the sound.
- Practice reading and writing our color words.
- Display the sight words around your home, in your car, and anywhere your
child spends time. Have your child read them to you often-just a few minutes a day makes a big difference!!
Can they recognize and read the word in under 5 seconds? Can they find the words in books you are reading?
- Read with your child each day, and have your child read to you when they
are ready. Dedicate 15 minutes each day to reading-a little bit of time can make a BIG DIFFERENCE!
- Create a quite environment free from distractions-this will greatly help
them focus on their job of reading!

There are many ways you can help your child prepare for the world of math.....
- Practice counting objects with your child. Have fun and be creative with this-show your child
counting can be fun!!
- Recognize and read numbers all around you. We are surrounded by numbers-they are everywhere
we go! Point numbers out to your child and practice reading them. Watch out-pretty soon your child will be pointing
them out to you!! To challenge them, see if they know which number comes before and after the number they find!
- Find patterns in the world around them. We practice the ABAB, AABAAB, ABBABB, and ABCABC patterns
in Kindergarten. Can the form these patterns with objects around your house?
- See how many shapes your child can find when you are out and about. Can they tell you the names
of the shapes they find?
