On April 19th four caterpillars arrived for our butterfly garden.
By April 27th they had all formed chrysalides. One of the chrysalides did not attach to the paper disk. It
hatched from a chrysalid on the floor of the butterfly garden.

This picture shows that the butterflies have emerged from their chrysalides.

The red spots that look like blood is actually meconium.
Meconium is the left-over color and unneeded tissue discharged after their wing formation.

In this picture you can see the butterfly feeding. It is drinking
sugar water that was squirted on wads of facial tissue.

We've now added carnations for the butterflies to drink nectar and
sugar water which is squirted on the flowers.

Can you spot the real butterfly?

The butterflies will remain in our classroom until May 13th when we
will be releasing them in front of the elementary building.
