Itasca Community College - Engineering Director Visit
On September 21st, 2006, ICC Engineering Director, Alisha Brinkman, visited with each of the chemistry and physics classes
to talk about engineering, science, and technology oportunities. She brought with her a fun engineering problem - a
sand separation task that gave students a hands-on activity to try.
GREAT LAKES AQUARIUM VISIT!!
On Friday, April 21st, students from various Eveleth-Gilbert science classes visited the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth,
MN. 42 students participated in the field trip. Staff members from the aquarium taught a lake limnology
class - students were able to collect Lake Superior water samples from the pier and analyze them for pH, dissolved oxygen,
plankton, and other chemical, physical and biological factors.
Students also had time to see the aquarium exhibits. Everyone enjoyed the trip very much.

CEP CHEMISTRY - Mesabi Range Chemistry Lab Visit
* On April 12th, the CEP Chemistry class visited the lab facilities at Mesabi Range College in Virginia.
The class did a neutralization lab and visited with college chemistry lab instructor, Kim Gierrman.
RIVERWATCH CONGRESS!
* Over 70 Eveleth-Gilbert science students, including all Applied Chemistry, Ecology, and CEP Chemistry students
attended the annual Riverwatch Congress at Fond du Lac Community College on March 14th, 2006.
Students attended presentations about river ecology, river sampling methods, animals and wildlife, fire prevention topics,
non-native fish species and camping techniques.
Physics Class Visits Mesabi Range College Science Department
* On Thursday, February 16th, our physics class visited the physics department at Mesabi Range Colleg in Virgina.
Physics instructor, Jason Slattery, helped the class do a lab on projectile motion. Fun was had by all who attended!
Thanks Mr. Slattery!
"Heat Engine" Lab Activity thanks to Mesabi Community College
On November 29th, Jason Slattery, Physics Instructor at Mesabi Community College visited our physics class. He
brought with him six "heat engines" - apparatus that allowed students to do some "Gas Law" lab activities. Thanks, Jason!
Landscape Architecture - What is it?
On November 23, a former EGHS student, class of 2003, visisted our physics class to discuss "Landscape Architecture"
- his major at North Dakota State University.
We learned what landscape architects do, what some of their projects might look like, and what somes classes
are required to become a landscape architect. We were also able to view some of Jonathan's projects / work. This
seems like a great career choice for someone who likes art and math/science stuff.
Thanks for the great presentation, Jonathan!

CEP CHEM CLASS VISITS MESABI COMMUNITY COLLEGE
On November 21st, our "College Credit" chemsitry class was able to visit Mesabi Community College. We received
a brief tour of the facilities and were able to do an acid-base neutralization lab. Thanks to Ms. Giermann for setting
up our visit and lab!
ICC ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE DAY
On November 9, 2005, students from Eveleth-Gilbert chemistry and physics classes visited Itasca Community College's Engineering
Building. Students were
able to participate in a variety of engineering design workshops, discuss engineering and science careers, make "gak"
in a chemistry lab, and eat a bunch of pizza.
Everyone had a really good day. Thanks to Brad, Alisha, and Ron at ICC Engineering for making the day such a good
one!

Riverwatch
On October 10-12th, Applied Chemistry and Ecology classes visited the St. Louis River at the United Taconite Dam on County
Hwy. 16. We did river testing as part of the "River Watch" program sponsored by Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
Students enjoyed warm temperatures (near 65 degrees Fahrenheit!) on all days. Even though it drizzled on us on Wednesday,
temperatures were still very comfortable for Northern Minnesota in October. We tested the water for pH, nitrates, phosphates,
dissovled oxygen levels, ecoli bacteria, and we collected, counted and sorted macroinvertebrates.
Student teacher, Ms. Bernu, accompanied us. Thanks Ms. Bernu!
Riverwatch, Take II
On October 17th and 18th, students from the CEP Chemistry class also participated in the River Watch program. It
was a lot colder on those days! Thanks to Kyle M, Kyle D, and Scott N for helping the juniors. What did we learn
from our field trip? Although students wear chest-waders in the river - they should still bring extra clothes!
